Coaching versus Counselling
*

People often ask us:

  • what's the difference between coaching and counselling?
  • isn't coaching just counselling in disguise?
There's a lot of similarity in the two disciplines. A lot of our friends are counsellors, some are counsellors and coaches. Let's be clear, although we've had some training in counselling skills, we're not here to offer counselling. We believe that there are two fundamental difference between the two:

  • Focus: counselling tends to look more at the past, in its search for reasons why we behave the way we do. Coaching tends to look more at the future.
  • Questions: counsellors tend to address "why?" questions, as in "why do I keep doing that?" and coaches tend to address "what?" questions, as in "what would you like it to be like?".
If you want to know more, please follow this link to a Coachville document discussing therapy versus counselling, which seems to accord with our view. http://www.todayscoach.com/2002/0109/default.html.

Occasionally we form the view that clients would benefit more from counselling than coaching and in that situation we will explore with them where they want to focus their attentions. We can recommend great counsellors to people who want that service.
